The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean

The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere & Ocean in the College of the Environment at the University of Washington is among the largest and oldest of NOAA’s Cooperative Institutes. In collaboration with NOAA and university researchers, JISAO scientists are at the forefront of basic and applied investigations on such critical issues as climate change and its impacts on humans and ecosystems, ocean acidification, fisheries assessments and tsunami modeling and forecasting.  Research is conducted under seven major themes:

  • Climate Research & Impacts — Climate prediction, impacts of climate variability and change, evaluation of water and energy cycles, polar research
  • Environmental Chemistry — ocean acidification, carbon cycle, aerosols and trace gases
  • Seafloor Processes — hydrothermal vents
  • Marine Ecosystems — climate and human impacts on ecosystems, physical, chemical and biological processes
  • Protection & Restoration of Marine Resources — effects of climate change on Puget Sound, harmful algal blooms and anoxic conditions
  • Tsunami Observations & Modeling — modeling/forecasting tsunamis, deployment of buoy observation network, developing warning systems
  • Ocean & Coastal Observations — deployment of moored buoy monitoring systems, assessment and improvement of global observing systems, measuring air-sea exchanges of energy and moisture in real time.

In addition to its research mission, JISAO has designed and implemented a vibrant education and outreach program which focuses on increasing environmental literacy and developing a future, diverse workforce skilled in science, math, engineering and technology.
