Established competitively in 2008, the Cooperative Institute for Climate Science (CICS-P) at Princeton University is a NOAA Cooperative Institute sponsored by NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL). CICS-P is a product of a highly successful collaboration between Princeton University and NOAA/GFDL stretching back to 1967.
CICS-P conducts research under three themes: (1) Earth System Modeling Development and Analysis - Develop and improve models that simulate and aid the understanding of the present climate and Earth system, and that can be used to predict changes in the state of the climate and Earth system; (2) Data Assimilation - Develop capabilities to assimilate both physical and biogeochemical observations to produce an estimate of the current environmental state for use in Earth system modeling and the prediction of the future state of the climate; and (3) Earth System Modeling Applications - Use Earth system models to study the processes associated with long term climate change and variability, and to make predictions of the future state of the Earth system.
CICS-P research activities assist NOAA in three of its Mission Goals: (1) Ecosystem Goal: Protect, restore and manage the use of coastal and ocean resources through an ecosystem approach to management; (2) Climate Goal: Understand climate variability and change to enhance society's ability to plan and respond; and (3) Weather and Water Goal: Serve society's needs for weather and water information. The primary focus is on the Climate Goal.
